Torrita, historic town centre

Torrita is an ancient town, situated 325 metres above sea level, in the western part of Val di Chiana. It was protected by a surrounding wall with square towers and four entrance gates: Porta a Pago, Porta Gavina, Porta Nova and Porta a Sole. Subject to the sovereignty and defence of the Republic of Siena, it was involved in the fight against Montepulciano before being conquered by Florence in 1554 and subjected to the power of the Medici. From the beginning of the twentieth century it underwent rapid development especially in artisan and wood-working activities.
